I’m so glad I did the Ragnar! I ran better than I expected to and I’m really proud of myself! It had it’s ups and downs but I think I’ll do it again.
The Ragnar Wasatch Back: 192 Miles from Logan to Park City, 12 friends.
I was runner 2 which was a relatively easy position. I consider it 3rd easiest runner and I’m good with that.
My first leg was considered Hard, 6.7 miles and I finished it in an hour and 10 minutes. That’s an average pace of 10:26 per mile! Woot!
My second leg was Easy, 3 miles and there is some debate as to when I finished it. It was some time between 27 min. and 30 min. so either way I nailed it!
My third leg was Easy, 3.6 miles and I finished in 38 min. 10.33 min miles, my slowest but still better than I expected!
On thursday night I MIGHT have gotten 3 hours of sleep. On friday night I got around 2.5 hours of sleep.
Here are some random thoughts about the Race:
There was a girl running in Sketchers Shape ups! What in the world was she thinking?!?
I think for most people the 2nd leg was the hardest because you were tired from your first leg but not so tired that you didn’t push it on your second, so it was exhausting and hurt. Vanessa was cursing up a storm after her second leg! On your third leg you are so achy and spent that it’s easy to forgive yourself if you walk some of it because you know you have done some amazing running and really given it your all.
Everybody’s stomach was doing a number on them before the 3rd leg. We decided it must just be a combination of not enough sleep, not having time to eat real meals and eating at irregular times, and then running yourself ragged. Luckily we had an experienced runner who brought a bottle of TUMS and we went through the entire thing.
Along with the stomach thing after my second leg my thighs starting feeling like burning, fire-y, death! I literally had to pull myself up stairs and out of chairs with my hands after the race because they wouldn’t go. A day later and I’m finally able to use those muscles again, it just hurts to.
We thought we’d have all this spare time but not so! There were several legs where the runner made it there before the van! Van two ran for almost 7 hours at night but between getting to a place where we can sleep and getting to the exchange to start our legs, changing, and eating, that left us with 2.5 hours of sleep. Wonderful.
The BYU cross country Ultra team passed us and they were so impressive! They finished the race in 18 hours ? min!!! Their avg. pace was 5.7 min per mile! Holy cow! (and Ultra means there were only 6 runners so each runner does twice as much)
There was this awesome hip hop team that had a boy running with them who was maybe 9? But at the exchanges they would hip hop into and out of the chute and that boy was awesome and adorable! When he finished one of the older guys shook up a soda and sprayed it all over him! They were hilarious.
There was a man who ran in furry underwear and a cape. And a group of women who ran in full Zena Warrior Princess garb.
Since I’ve been done, I’ve been ready for a nap about every 3 hours and the time has come. Tiff out.
